Joemmegang

We’re excited for you to try Joemmegang, the newest beer in our Brewmaster’s Obsession series. We think that it’s a perfect marriage of coffee, beer, and chocolate.

The beer begins as a malty brown ale, comprised of Belgian aroma, caramel malts, and oats. A bit of lactose adds body and some sweetness, and a heaping helping of cocoa nibs in the whirlpool provides further richness, and a deep chocolaty aroma.  Hop aroma is nonexistent, and bitterness is there just to keep the sweetness in check.

We worked with our great friends at Stagecoach Coffee in Cooperstown to come up with a custom coffee blend that complimented our base beer. Sumatra, Papua New Guinea, and French roast form a combination with chocolate, earth, spice, fruit, and light roast characteristics. Following primary fermentation the beer is cold crashed and yeast is removed. Coffee is added to a secondary tank and the beer is circulated through the freshly roasted beans to extract even more flavor and aroma.

The result is really something special: aromas of cold brewed coffee, milk chocolate and rich malt – the taste follows, round, smooth and creamy, with a touch of sweetness.

Joemmegang will be available in bottles and on draft later this month in: CA, CO, CT, DC, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, NJ, NV, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, VT, WA

Cheers.

Hopped Hennepin Series

It occurred to us at the brewery that when we trialed hops for evaluation on the pilot system, that Hennepin, our saison, might make a great base beer. We were right.

The malt base of Hennepin is light on its feet, it’s got adequate body from the relatively high ABV, and it finishes crisp and dry. When we removed the spices that are characteristic of the classic Hennepin, then late edition and dry hops are really afforded an opportunity to shine. To be fair to the original Hennepin, we don’t see these hop explorations as an improvement on our old friend, but they are unique, special, and worthy of sharing with those who have an interest in Hennepin, a particular hop, or just great beer.

Single hop beers are nothing new, but the two Hennepin Hop beers this year aren’t actually that. We decided to retain the excellent and balanced bittering qualities afforded by Styrian Goldings in both of these beers.  Both examples are hoppier and more aromatic than traditional Hennepin, accomplished with a combination of larger bittering charges, late edition and whirlpool hopping, as well as dry hopping. Calypso and Triskel Hennepin will be limited releases available only on draft, and we hope to continue these explorations with several new releases each year.

Calypso (April release): Bright fruity and citrus (lemon) aroma with some pear and apple. Slight melon and tea-like character as well. Firm and pleasant bitterness.

Triskel (September release): Fruity, floral and peppery aroma. Amplified “noble” type character. Moderately hoppy taste with great spicy notes.  This hop plays really well with our house yeast.

The Hopped Hennepin Series will be available on draft in: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, NJ, NV, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TX, VA, VT, WA, WI

Cheers.

Three-Eyed Raven

UPDATE: Ommegang beers are available only in the United States and a few places in Canada. We cannot ship overseas and are unaware of any retailers that sell/ship beer outside the US.

BUY ONLINE: Craftshack.com has Three-Eyed Raven in stock.

The temperature in Cooperstown was in the 40’s yesterday and it should be above freezing during the day for the rest of the week. We’re taking this as a sign that spring WILL come to NY this year and with the arrival of spring comes the debut of Three-Eyed Raven Dark Saison Ale, our fifth Game of Thrones-inspired beer, available in retail on April 6.

There are always a lot of questions about how to get the Game of Thrones-inspired beers and it’s proved helpful for us to post search tips for both pro-beer seekers and those new to the sport. We know there’s a huge demand for this beer series so we brewed 98 brews of Three-Eyed Raven which is the equivalent of 614,000 bottles or more than 121,000 gallons of beer.

Ommegang is currently not distributed in North Dakota, South Dakota, Mississippi, West Virginia, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming so unfortunately Three-Eyed Raven will not be for sale in these states. Ommegang beers are only exported to a few provinces of Canada at the moment so Three-Eyed Raven will only be available outside of the United States in British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan. There is not currently a release date set for Canada. We’re working with our distributor there and we’ll update this post when we have one.

It is illegal for us to sell online or directly to customers who are not at the brewery, so we cannot do any online orders. We sell the beer from the brewery to distributors in each state who then sell to retailers (bars, grocery stores and other locations). There are a few websites that are allowed to sell beer directly to fans and we will post those here as they come in.

The first available sales day is Monday, April 6, a week prior to the return of Game of Thrones on April 12 at 9pm on HBO. Not all stores or bars will be launching the beer this day as their delivery time for this week may vary. If you are in the Cooperstown area, you may purchase Three-Eyed Raven at the brewery store from 12-5pm beginning Saturday, March 14.

Our best advice is to call your local beer store first. The beer is going to sell very quickly in some places so before you trek out to find it, call ahead and make sure your store has it in stock before making any long journeys.

We have a beer finder that will show the locations that the beer has been sold to. The beer finder works by aggregating sales data from the distributor and it is uploaded often a few days after the sale into the account. With the great demand it might even be sold out by the time it is listed on our beer finder, so again we strongly encourage you to call your local retailers in advance.

Happy hunting,
Allison

Nirvana IPA

Tri-State hop-heads are about to discover an entirely new state of being! Yesterday we released details about Nirvana IPA, our first-ever American-style India Pale Ale that will be available in across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. It’ll be available in mid-April in 12oz bottle six-packs and on draft.

Nirvana IPA is kettle-hopped with Bravo, Simcoe, Centennial, Topaz, and Mosaic, dry-hopped with Centennial, Citra, Simcoe and Amarillo and clocks in at 6.5% ABV and 60 IBUs. The flavor is hoppy, juicy and citrusy goodness – without harsh bitterness.

Innovation Manager Mike says the aromas of grapefruit, peach, pineapple and apricot are mouth-watering and the taste is a big citrus smack, rounded and juicy with tropical and floral notes and just a touch of honey malt sweetness. We’re sold.

We’re really excited about this new addition to our line up and can’t wait to hear your thoughts. Stay tuned for details about other new beers.

Cheers,
Allison
