Visitors’ Center Expansion

UPDATE 1/29/2018:

Dear friends,

As you know, our visitors center is undergoing an extensive renovation this winter. We’re excited about the expansion and the world-class brewery experience we’ll be able to provide our visitors once the work is complete.

While we were hoping the renovation wouldn’t disrupt café service too much this winter and spring, we’ve decided to close Café Ommegang until work in the café and the kitchen is complete. Occasionally this winter and spring, tours & tastings, and the store will be closed as well. We will post those dates on our website as we identify them. Our store hours are now 12-5 pm daily until future notice. The final tour and tasting each day will be at 4 and 4:30 pm respectively unless otherwise noted on our website.

We apologize for this inconvenience and will miss seeing you at the café this winter and into the spring. Rest assured that when we reopen, it’ll be worth the wait! Please follow us on social media where we’ll share updates and sneak peeks of the renovation as it progresses.

Big news, friends! We recently broke ground on an extensive expansion of our onsite visitors’ center! We’re upgrading all facets of the facility to enable us to better accommodate the surging crowds of beer tourists that flock to the area. The renovations began just before the holidays and will be completed by the start of the 2018 summer season. With nearly 80,000 visitors annually, 40% of whom visit between June and August, we are thrilled to enhance the capacity to deliver a superlative experience to every visitor.

Aiding in the renovation and marketing of the brewery once the renovation is complete is a $525 thousand grant that we received in December from the state’s economic development council. The grant designates $375 thousand for capital expansion and $150 thousand for marketing. The money for the expansion will allow us to expand café and retail facilities, enabling us to better serve the tourism traffic throughout the year.

A message from our president, Doug Campbell: “With this renovation, we will build an onsite experience that is world-class, matching the quality of the experience with the quality of the beer we brew here every day. As a significant tourist draw for the area, we always aim to provide a unique, memorable experience that leaves our visitors with a love of beer and of the Cooperstown area. The grant from New York State and the additional capacity it will enable us to add will aid in that aim significantly.”

Highlights of the $2 million renovation include a new entry way with access to the store, tasting room, and café; additional seating in the café with tables along a windowed wall that looks out onto the patio and brewery ground; additional outdoor seating under an all-weather pavilion; and an expansion of retail store including the addition of a beer cellar to accommodate new small batch limited releases.

The renovations will require the us to close the visitors’ center for two days in mid-January and to operate a slightly limited café service for roughly six weeks from early-March to mid-April. The store will remain open, and tours and tastings will still be offered daily throughout the period. We will post updates on the renovations via social media to give sneak peeks on the progress.

Hours for the brewery store and café will remain 12-5 PM Sunday to Thursday and 12-9 PM Friday and Saturday until the interior work begins, unless otherwise posted on our website.

Big Top BCTC: Breweries and Beers

It’s Monday, and Big Top BCTC is coming to the brewery in just a few days. We’ve been working ’round the clock on all the final details, including the attending brewery list and what beers they are bringing! The list is alphabetized by brewery name and has the tent and table information on there too so you can plan out your afternoon at the tasting.

The list can be downloaded here: BCTC 2017 Attending Brewers and Beers_FINAL.

You can also view a PDF here: BCTC-2017-Attending-Brewers-and-Beers_FINAL.

If there are any changes this week (ie. someone can’t make it or they want to swap in a different beer) we will make changes to this document up until 5 pm on Thursday.

Cheers!

Innovation Beers at Big Top BCTC

Innovation Manager Justin Forsythe has had a busy year developing new beers on the brewery’s pilot system and he’s ready to share a few of those new recipes with BCTC attendees on Saturday, August 5. Some of these beers are just for fun and some are test batches for future Ommegang beers. In any case, we think they’re delicious and we can’t wait to hear what you think about them next weekend.

As these are test brews, only one sixtel of each beer exists so be sure to stop by early in the appropriate session if there’s something you want to try.  These beers will be poured in the innovation tent which is adjacent to the brewery patio.

On tap for session one (2:30 to 5 pm):

Belgian Pilsner (5.1 % ABV): Crisp, clean, and dry; fermented with a Belgian lager yeast.

Experimental Pale (6.4 % ABV): Brewed with two experimental unnamed hop varieties from the PNW, fermented with American ale yeast.

Belgian Stout (6.7 %): Brewed with cocoa nibs, fermented with a special Belgian yeast.

Blend #1 (5.2 %): A blend of Pale Sour Ale and Short Sleeve Saison, with apricot and peach juices.

On tap for session two (5 to 7 pm):

Double Rainbow (8.0 % ABV): NEIPA with Mosaic, Simcoe, Motueka, Centennial, and Topaz hops.

Hibiscus Hennepin (7.7 % ABV): Our beloved farmhouse saison brewed with hibiscus flowers.

Tripel IPA (9.5 % ABV): Belgian-style Tripel brewed with Lopal and Ekuanot hop powder.

Oak-Aged Dubbel (7.7 % ABV): Belgian-style Dubbel aged briefly on oak.

You can find all of these beers listed on Untappd. We hope you’ll give them a try and let us know on the app what you think!

Meet Brunetta

Good morning, friends. Today’s the day we launch Brunetta Oud Bruin at the brewery. Today’s also our annual garage sale so while you’re picking up Brunetta, take a peek at some items from Ommegang’s past on sale at deep discounts. Win-win! We’re open 11 am to 5 pm today.

Ommegang Brunetta Bottle 11.2ozBrunetta is a 5% ABV traditional Oud Bruin, or sour brown ale, developed by our brewmaster Phil Leinhart, and the master blenders at our sister brewery, Liefmans, in Oudenaarde, Belgium. Liefmans has been perfecting their blending techniques for more than 300 years, and is renowned for their clean and balanced sour beers.

The Oud Bruin style is known for its playful flirtation between sweet and sour flavors and Brunetta is no exception. “Brunetta is a mild, clean Oud Bruin, well-balanced and with a touch of caramel sweetness from the specialty malts,” says Phil. “It’s been a privilege to brew with Marc Coesens and his talented team at Liefmans. The opportunity to work with our beer brethren is always such an honor.”

Brunetta pours a deep amber-brown with clarity and a tan head with light retention. Aromas of raisin, prune, and sweet malts are followed by subtle hints of lactic sourness. The balanced sweet and sour flavor leads with caramel malt and finishes with a clean, refreshing sourness. Brunetta is medium bodied and moderately dry with a pleasant nutty flavor in the finish.

Brewed with a traditional blend of pilsner, amber, and caramel malts and with minimal hopping, Brunetta’s mixed culture fermentation begins in Liefmans’ open copper vats and continues in stainless tanks for four to eight months. This Oud Bruin’s balanced acidity is a perfect accompaniment to rich dishes like duck confit, chicken liver pâté, all manner of mild cheeses, and NY-style cheese cakes and other mildly sweet desserts.

Available in 11.2 oz. four-packs and on draft at the brewery beginning today, Brunetta will also be available in select Ommegang retailers in the following states beginning this month and into June: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, HI, IA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NE, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV plus Washington D.C., U.S.V.I., and P.R.
