Winter is Here

Hi, friends!

Our latest Game of Thrones-inspired beer, Winter is Here, has worked its way from distributors to your favorite stores and bars. So have the 2+1 gift packs featuring Winter is Here and previously-released Fire and Blood Red Ale along with an Ommegang and Game of Thrones-branded glass. The beer and the gift packs are available nearly nationwide by now. Some locations received their beer sooner than others due to shipping times.

If you are in the Cooperstown area, you may now purchase Winter is Here, the gift packs, and a very limited amount of Fire and Blood Red Ale in single bottles at the brewery store. We had some Fire and Blood bottles that were not used in the gift packs but it is not enough for distribution so it will be sold on its own only at the brewery and only while the limited supply lasts. The Drogon label is the only label used for this release of Fire and Blood.

It is illegal for us to sell online or directly to customers who are not at the brewery, so we cannot take any online orders. We sell the beer from the brewery to distributors who then sell to retailers (bars, grocery stores and other locations). There are a few websites that are allowed to sell beer directly to fans and we will post those them here as they come in.

Ommegang is currently not distributed in Mississippi, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming so unfortunately Winter is Here and the gift packs will not be for sale in these states. Distributors in the following states have ordered this release: AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, HI, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, plus Washington, D.C., the U.S.V.I., and Puerto Rico. Outside of the United States, these beers may only be available in Ontario and Alberta, Canada. There is not currently a release date set for Canada. We’re working with our distributor there and we’ll update this post when/if we have one.

We have a beer finder that will show the locations that the beer has been sold to. The beer finder works by aggregating sales data from the distributor and it is uploaded often a few days after the sale into the account. With the great demand it might even be sold out by the time it is listed on our beer finder, so we strongly encourage you to call your local retailers to ask about availability before you drive around to find it. When you do find Winter is Here and the gift packs, you can tag a photo of the beer with #GoTxOmmegang on social media to let friends know where you found it.

Meet Smoked Porter

As cooler weather settles in on the northeast, we are pleased to introduce our latest limited edition brew: Ommegang Smoked Porter. This nod to a traditional English beer is brewed with subtle additions of smoked malt and a touch of Saaz hops to add additional depth and character to an otherwise traditional English brew. While the style is a departure from our traditional Belgian-style beers, the characteristic aromas of chocolate malt along with caramelized sugar are reminiscent of many things Belgian, and of all things good. Smoked Porter is available now in limited quantities in four-packs and on draft while supplies last. The brewery release is November 11.

Smoked Porter is brewed with a carefully crafted blend of Pilsner, Special B, Munich 20, Cara-20, Midnight Wheat, chocolate malt, and smoked malt. Balanced hopping is achieved with Saaz, while fermentation with American ale yeast ensures the malt remains in the spotlight.

This 7.6% ABV beer pours a deep dark brown – almost black – with a thick tan head. Aromas of cocoa, burnt sugar, and roasted malt give way to subtle hints of smoke. The flavor follows the aroma with rich notes of cocoa and roasted malt, followed by caramel sweetness and mild smoke. A medium-full body leads to a well-rounded finish with lingering smoke on the back-end.

Smoked Porter is a wonder accompaniment for a variety of foods. Pair smoke with smoke – and enjoy with smoked meats and cheeses. It’s also an ideal charcuterie beer, and a wonder pairing for rich confections like chocolate cheesecake.

Available now at retailers in these states: AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IA, IL, KY, MA, MD, ME, MN, MO, NC, ND, NE, NJ, NV, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TX, VA, VT, WV, plus Puerto Rico and the U.S.V.I., our beer finder can help you search for Smoked Porter by zip code.

Cheers to 20 Years

When we were founded in 1997 on a 140-acre former hop farm it was with a simple goal in mind – brew beautiful, imaginative Belgian-style ales blended with a touch of American innovation. Twenty years later, that is still the our goal, and to celebrate two decades of inspired Belgian-style brewing, we are proud to release our 20th Anniversary Ale, a luxurious Belgian-style dark ale aged for more than five months in bourbon barrels. It’s available now in many markets and you can use our beer finder to search for retailers near you.

For 20th Anniversary Ale, we took a classic Belgian-style brew and gave it an American twist through aging in Bourbon whiskey barrels. Brewed with a careful blend of Munich, Special B, Cara-Vienne, and Blackprinz malts with additions of Belgian candi sugar, 20th Anniversary Ale enjoys balanced hopping with Spalter Select, and Styrian Golding hops. Following fermentation, this deep, rich, complex brew inspired by the great Trappist brewing tradition, spends several months maturing in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels. The result is an ale perfect for sharing, celebrating, and rejoicing.

“Twenty years ago, our founders built Brewery Ommegang with a simple purpose: to use Belgian-inspired brewing to elevate the entire conversation about craft beer in this country,” remarks our president, Doug Campbell. “Today, two decades later, with the release of this beer, we honor their legacy while at the very same time we continue to pursue it every day.”

20th Anniversary Ale pours a deep mahogany color with a thick tan head. Aromas of oak and bourbon upfront give way to subtler notes of toffee, caramel, and chocolate. The flavor is mildly sweet, with notes of caramel and molasses mingling with hints of bourbon and oak. A rich mouthfeel, and full body resolves to a sweet finish balanced nicely by a slight drying astringency. Dark roasted meats, rich creamy cheeses, Belgian chocolate are excellent pairing options, or enjoy this beer as a dessert all on its own.

In addition to 20th Anniversary Ale, we’ve also released a 20th Anniversary Rare Beer Pack that includes three rare beers and an Ommegang glass. The beers, Bourbon Barrel-Aged Three Philosophers, Ginnepin Saison brewed with juniper berries, and Bourbon Barrel-aged Abbey Ale, are all unique takes on a few of our favorite beers.

Both 20th Anniversary Ale and 20th Anniversary Rare Beer Pack are available now in many retailers in the following states: AZ, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, UT, WA, WI, WV, plus Washington D.C., the U.S.V.I., and Puerto Rico.

Hopstate NY 2017

NY State Hops

As hop harvest wraps up in NY, we are proud to once again shine the spotlight on New York State hop farmers with the release of Hopstate NY IPA, the third annual vintage of Hopstate NY beer, brewed with all-NYS hops. Brewed to help support the state’s burgeoning hop industry, this year’s Hopstate NY is an India Pale Ale, and the beer is available now only in NY State on draft and in four-packs.

The hop industry has deep roots in NY State. The region was the epicenter of hops production in the United States in the 1800s, producing 80% of the country’s hops. For the past several years, Ommegang, which is located on the former Lynes Hop Farm in Cooperstown, NY, has purchased New York State-grown and processed hops. Hops for this year’s beer were sourced from Weathertop Farm in Palmyra, Pedersen Farms in Seneca Castle, Willet Hop & Grain in Willet, and Mosher Farm in Bouckville.

From our president, Doug Campbell: “In this, our third year of the Hopstate NY program, we are extremely proud to contribute to the continued advancement of the hop farming trade throughout New York. We are delighted to see the continued growth of Farm Breweries around the state and we continue to believe that with the sustained support of brewers, New York’s hop famers can regain their rightful place among the world’s most respected hop-growing regions.”

At 7.4% ABV, Hopstate NY IPA is brewed with Cascade, Chinook, Centennial, and Nugget hops, and is fermented with an English ale yeast. The beer pours a hazy pale orange with a fluffy white head. The aroma is bursting with tropical fruit and citrus notes balanced by hints of sweet malt. The flavor follows the aroma with tropical fruit, and citrus hop character upfront balanced by a pleasantly sweet bready malt character. Balanced bitterness spreads across the whole palate, paired with a velvety-smooth mouthfeel and a medium-full body. The finish is moderately dry with just a touch of lingering bitterness. Hopstate NY IPA pairs well with grilled and smoked meats and fish, pizza, burgers, and moderately sharp cheeses.

This year, Hopstate NY IPA is only available in New York but as the local hop industry grows, this beer may expand to new states, symbolizing its rebirth and vitality. The beer is available now in 12oz. four-packs for the suggested retail price of $10.99. Our website offers a beer finder for locating retailers by zip code in case you’re thirsty to try this!

Cheers!
